I’m Not Your Typical Personal Trainer... And That's Exactly Why I Became One

People often assume that because I'm a personal trainer, fitness must come naturally to me.

That I leap out of bed every morning excited to work out.

That I meal prep every Sunday.

That I count my macros.

That I never eat chocolate.

That I always know exactly what I'm doing in the gym.

The truth?

Not even close.

This Isn't One of Those "I Lost 10 Stone" Stories

A lot of personal trainers have a defining moment.

Maybe they lost a significant amount of weight.

Maybe they went through a difficult time in life and the gym became their therapy.

Maybe they completely transformed themselves.

I love those stories.

But they're not mine.

Mine is much less dramatic.

I've never been significantly overweight.

I've always enjoyed being active.

I've never completely fallen out of love with exercise.

But I've also never been the perfectly disciplined fitness robot people seem to imagine.

I Love Chocolate

Actually...

I really love chocolate.

The funny thing is...

Chocolate hates me.

It gives me migraines.

You'd think that would stop me eating it.

It doesn't.

I simply try to eat just enough that the migraine was worth it.

Is it sensible?

Absolutely not.

Does it prove I'm human?

Definitely.

I try to eat well.

I make good choices most of the time.

But I don't count calories.

I don't obsess over macros.

I don't believe spending your life telling yourself you can't have something is a healthy relationship with food.

Because if all you think about is what you can't eat...

Eventually that's all you want.

Life's too short for that.

Here's My Biggest Secret...

I have my own personal trainer.

People are always surprised by that.

"But surely you can write your own programme?"

Of course I can.

That isn't the problem.

The problem is...

I'm basically lazy.

Left to my own devices, I'd walk into the gym...

Look at my phone.

Do a couple of sets of the exercises I enjoy.

Avoid the ones I don't.

Convince myself I've worked hard enough.

Then leave before I've even broken a proper sweat.

Sound familiar?

That's exactly why I have a coach.

Because coaches need coaching too.

Routine Beats Motivation Every Time

People ask me how I stay motivated.

Honestly?

I don't.

I rely on routine far more than motivation.

My gym sessions go into my diary just like meetings or appointments.

That means I don't accidentally book something else in their place.

There are days I don't feel like training.

There are days I think I don't have time.

But if I'm honest...

We usually do have the time.

It's about priorities.

Once exercise becomes part of your routine, it stops being a decision you have to make every day.

It simply becomes something you do.

Yes... I Cheat

Here's another confession.

If there's an easier way to do an exercise...

My body will find it.

Every.

Single.

Time.

It's not even deliberate.

Sometimes my coach points it out and I think,

"I didn't even realise I was doing that."

Our bodies are incredibly clever.

They naturally try to make things easier.

That's exactly why good coaching matters.

Because sometimes you need somebody watching you to say,

"Nope... do that again."

Fitness isn't supposed to be easy.

If it was...

Everyone would do it.

Injuries Haven't Stopped Me

Over the years I've collected my fair share of injuries.

One physiotherapist once told me that the amount of exercise I do isn't necessarily good for me.

Maybe they're right.

But I also can't imagine what my life would look like without movement.

So I train intelligently.

I train around injuries.

I listen to my body.

And I have an amazing team of physiotherapists, osteopaths and sports massage therapists who help keep me doing what I love.

Being active doesn't mean pretending you're never sore.

It means learning how to keep moving safely.

Strong... But Still Happy to Accept Help

I love being strong.

I love knowing I can lift heavy things.

But...

If somebody offers to carry something to the car for me...

I'm definitely saying yes!

Being strong doesn't mean you have to prove it every five minutes.

It just means you know you could if you needed to.

So What's My Point?

Maybe you've got an injury.

Maybe you're busy.

Maybe you've convinced yourself you're lazy.

Maybe you've started and stopped a hundred times before.

Trust me...

I understand more than you think.

You don't need to be perfect to become fitter.

You don't need perfect nutrition.

You don't need endless motivation.

You just need to keep turning up.

Some days you'll smash it.

Some days you'll simply get through it.

Both count.

Progress, Not Perfection

The one thing I never want to hear is:

"I can't do that."

Because usually what people actually mean is:

"I can't do that... yet."

A good coach understands progressions.

A good coach knows how to make the impossible feel possible.

One small step at a time.

One extra rep.

One little improvement.

Until one day...

The thing that once felt impossible has quietly become your warm-up.
